New Feature: Collections

Hi Society6, I'm Matt and I'm Product Director here at S6. This means that I'm responsible for the actual Society6 website. I work behind the scenes with a team of talented designers and developers to bring great new features to you and our customers.

A few months back we asked a lot of you what we should focus on next and we received a ton of great feedback. The loudest support was for a way for you to organize your work into more specific groupings.

Today we are very excited to announce the release of our new Collection feature, available now for all members.

Let's get started:

- All product pages now have a new 'Add To Collection' button which will allow you to create a new collection or add to an existing one.

- Add any products, from your shop or any other, to the collection of your choice. You can add all the same type product, or mix and match product types as you choose. The contents and theme are entirely up to you.

- Once three products have been added to a collection it will become public and visible in your http://society6.com/username/collection page.

- Check out the collection you created and click 'Edit Collection' to be able to delete or sort the order of products as you see fit.

- Share your collections through our built in social bar, or by dropping the link directly wherever you want.

Those are the basics, but as you'll discover there is a lot more you can do with collections - from how you curate and organize them, to how you share them and why.

Here are some of our favorite new collections from the last 12 hours:

http://society6.com/andyfairhurst/collection/superhero-kids

http://society6.com/rickcrane/collection/time-pieces

http://society6.com/rorywood/collection/type

We're very excited to get this feature out to the S6 community and see the types of collections you put together - from artists grouping their art to fans sharing the work of their favorite artists. This is just the first step for Collections with new ideas in the works.

Speak up in the comments below and let us know what you'd like to see or share your new collections with us. We hear the feedback we get from you and we've got more great features coming in 2015!

Very cool feature, I will definitely use it.. nice to be able to categorize when you have different types of works. Maybe I would like it if the collections could somehow be featured on the front page of your personal shop, so if one would follow my URL http://society6.com/wobins they would see the products that I picked out (in a certain theme maybe, or just the ones people like best - bestsellers etc). People will enter my shop and be able to view it as I want them to, in this way the seller will have more influence. Thank you!

Happy to see this feature materialize - can finally get my Fruit in one place: http://society6.com/christopherdina/c...tion/fruit

Would love to edit the collection name, reorder collections and images within collections. I feel the big gray box header space (within collections) could be used for another image, maybe the headers go above - less about the box, more about the images. Anyway, thanks for getting this done.

I agree with @Nine Bryant Studio, one feature I would love to have is watermarks over our images (or some thing of that sort).

Question on Collections
I've been checking out the collections of the above artists! Great work guys! Some of the artists I already follow but under collections, it says +Follow (for the artist) instead of Following. Is it suppose to be like that?

I think it'd be great if artists could have their work sold as wrapping paper and stickers. I don't know if it's something I've missed somewhere, as I've been a member less than a year, but I'd like a way to keep track of all my sales and not just the orders I've placed. I see where I'm getting paid, but I don't see how many products I've sold.

Rory Wood commented on Monday, November 24, 2014 5:08pm
@Okti - This is definitely the plan but we did not want to hold up the launch of the feature pending the Artist Shop integration. There is a ton of value that can still be captured by allowing artists to create their own landing page experience, but we'll definitely be adding more shop support to the feature in time!
Rory Wood commented on Monday, November 24, 2014 5:10pm
@Je Suis un Lapin - Definitely a great suggestion and something I'll pass along to the development team. In the meantime, the way the ordering works is the first collection will be the last one you added to. So if you really have 2 or 3 you'd like at the top of your page, just make sure they're the last collections you updated.
Rory Wood commented on Monday, November 24, 2014 5:11pm
@Christopher Dina - renaming is definitely something we'll be addressing in a future iteration. Not sure I understand the other part of your suggestion if you'd like to clarify?
2sweet4words Designs commented on Monday, November 24, 2014 6:45pm
Collections should be limitless and the titles should be changeable. Love the ability to group and organize but there should not be limitations on how many goes into a collection or how many collections there can be.
Okti commented on Monday, November 24, 2014 11:44pm
That sounds good, Rory Wood. I can't wait to see what changes and new features you guys will bring in the future, always enhancing the experience so far!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Just what I've been wanting! With 11 pages of designs, I can now organize them by theme. I already see they change order on the collections page when you add new pieces. I agree with the previous comments though about adding the ability to rename collections. It would be nice to be able to add a description to collections too. Here's the collections I've done already:

http://society6.com/harveywarwick/collection/stars

And more will come! For those who don't know, you can rearrange items within a collection by clicking on Edit Collection, then clicking on and dragging the individual pieces into the order you want.

Zevada commented on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 8:16pm
I agree with previous comments that the Collections should be featured on the artist's home page, or at least at the top of the sidebar list. As a buyer it's awkward to scroll all the way down to the bottom of a looooong list of product categories in order to get to the Collections. Especially when I then find the artist has no Collections.

This isn't as much an issue when the artist only has 2 pages. But for the artist that have 20+ pages having easy access to Collections would be greatly helpful as a way to quickly find specific types of work.
Zevada commented on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 8:31pm
A NOTE TO ARTISTS, from a buyer viewpoint:

As a buyer I really encourage you to use this feature, particularly if you have a variety in the medium or style of work. Or if you simply have a lot of pieces (more than 5-10 pages).

There are times I want to quickly find a specific piece I've seen before (or check if the artist has a specific item), but doing so means wading through an unrealistic number of pages. Or I can't find my bookmark. Or my previous link isn't working. Or the search feature brings up far too many results to sort through, and none seem to be the item I'm trying to find.

Using the Collections feature as a means to categorize your work seems like a good way to give us customers a way to access items quickly and easily. The downside I've found to buying on S6 is a lack of search feature in individual stores and a lack of store categories.

I want to buy your stuff - take some time to make it easier. :)

For example, if you do both typography and painting make a Collection for each so we can quickly browse.
Other options based on my own shopping experience:
- divide abstract work from realistic work,
- categorize graphics/patterns intended for products separate from drawings intended as wall art,
- identify photography, watercolor and acrylic painting individually,
- list portraits separate from graphic design.

Hope that suggestion is helpful.

Jayce JvR commented on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 12:59am
Maybe in the future there could be a page where people could browse through everyones collections, by that I mean a way to get to the collections that isn't just on the artists page itself. If there is something like that, I unfortunately don't know about it and don't know how to find it.
thursdayj commented on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 2:59pm
I'd also like to see a way to browse or search collections (maybe in the "My society" area). They're almost buried now unless you're looking at a specific artist.

Support guy was baffled...he's referring us higher up to get them to fix us hopefully...I told him others in the FAQ were having issues too...

Sorry, I'm quite new with this. How do you share your collections?
Carrie Anderson commented on Saturday, June 6, 2015 2:55am
Yes to collections! Initial feedback, it would be great to add multiple photos at a time to a collection. Also, it would be great to see which collection(s) a photo is in when looking at the individual photo page (so you don't add multiple times).
dgpmiami commented on Monday, August 3, 2015 11:45am
8 months later...I'm also getting the "not a valid referer" but only on some of the posts.
Emma Jayne commented on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 12:33pm
All I am getting is an add to collections box. How do I actually use it? It really isn't clear.
An FAQ spot for this would be really helpful.

Wow, interesting. I have to figure out how to use it at better... thank you for the new feature!
Notsniw Art commented on Saturday, April 9, 2016 4:21am

For the life of me, I cannot figure out your site, I have never spent so much time on a site meant to be simple going in circles. Must be me.

Dianne Vagg Artist commented on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 1:28am
I have just put together several collection relating to my artwork and photos. To name a few, there are Clothing, Blankets, Doonas/Duvet, IPad, I Phone and Cpmputers, and so much more. I have things that will interest children as well as adults, to make your home cheery over the Winter months or bright and happy throughout the Summer months. Enjoy! Okay, I'm at the screen that says (1) Add items from any project page (2) . . . How in the world do I add the items to my collections? I'm not seeing any way of doing that on this page.
Imogen Pallant-Roe commented on Friday, February 10, 2017 11:10am
How do you add to an already existing collection?! I tried clicking Edit, but that only allows me to sort them or delete.. Thanks :)
CharlesDrawin commented on Sunday, March 5, 2017 7:05pm
You have to click on every single piece and then add them to the collection, oh and if you want a new follower please take a look at my collection :)

Why can't I add one specific design to an existing collection? Do you need a minimum amount of likes to be able to add it to a collection or is there some sort of bug?
Becky Titus commented on Saturday, October 7, 2017 1:30pm
Why is there no add to collection button on the metal print pages? Thanks :-)

Something is wrong with my account. I don't seem to have any way to add any of my work to a collection. None my items pages have a way to add them, and the collections page has nothing either. This feature looks broken to me.
crookedrobin commented on Friday, July 6, 2018 6:23am
re collections:
am i missing something here or do i have to go through every single product page - i.e hundreds or thousands of pages potentially - and individually click through every product to add it to a collection??!! surely there is a better way to do this? !! clarity would be greatly appreciated - im getting absolutely nowhere with this feature...

a suggestion:
create a collection. have an 'add to collection' button within that, that directs through to your 'manage posts', where you could have a check box beside each item/design to add to varying collections. it means creating collections first, that populate a list somewhere in manage posts somewhere, that can then be ticked. it would be SOooo much easier to be able to add a particular design in full (i.e all it's products) to a collection, and then within the collection be able to opt out particular pages.
thanks, Eimear/crookedrobin
crookedrobin commented on Friday, July 6, 2018 6:28am
p.s i see a few other comments on this thread that allude to the same issue - i.e how to add to a collection. clarification would be mega good and if not installed, then it'd be super mega good, and logical, to install it (says the non web developer) cheers! CR
crookedrobin commented on Friday, July 6, 2018 6:30am
@zevada - totally agree!
Eric Pauker commented on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 3:16pm
Something seems to be broken with collections right now. Starting on Jul 24, 2018 every work I add to a collection ends up linking to someone else's work. The preview and name in my collection is correct, but the actual link goes to someone else's work.

This needs to be fixed immediately!

Where are my saved (heart button on every pic) choices. Can't find them. Thanks Tammie
Cynthia Friedlob commented on Sunday, June 9, 2019 9:14pm
I don't see a way to put something in a collection at the time it's listed. You have to post, then go to the posted item to add it. On Etsy it's possible to choose a category (their version of collection) at the time you're listing. Much easier. Hope that will be implemented here. I see crookedrobin suggested one possibility (above). Thank you!

It looks like Collections has been broken for a few years, but I figured I'd add my request for it to be fixed as well.
Do you have a shared Trello or place to log bugs or feature requests? Society6 desperately needs a UI/UX designer and some engineers to fix the immense number of problems with the site. I'll be migrating my business off of here as soon as our Shopify page is up as we're really disappointed with the inability to customize what appears in our store, what products are featured, the order of our listings, the ability to make collections, etc. I'd advise improving your shop owners' experience soon as there are plenty of better competing platforms available.

KaihuaDesignFinland commented on Monday, October 26, 2020 7:19am
Hello, it might not be useful to create a collection as the photos do not download. Customers will exit soon if the page is slow.
