Fractal art is extensively both an exploration of self similar patterns and the creation and design of them. Both goals of acheiving something aesthetically pleasing along with mathematically fascinating. Usually you have a general idea of what you want to create but never know exactly how it will look until you're done. Sometimes, as you explore the combining of patterns, you find new ones that can drastically add more interest into the design.
