Discovering film and photography from a very early age, John D Williams became fascinated by the moving image and visual arts. Near his home town of Braintree in Essex, there was a VHS tape video club called “Steve’s Videos” owned by a polish man and his daughters. Around 1982-83 he asked his father to join the club to hire the latest movies as well as non-mainstream foreign language films. It was this exposure to art-house cinema that fired his imagination into the power and beauty of the moving image as a visual story, his photography developed from this understanding. He developed his pictorial eye by studying film at A Level in Colchester, before taking a degree in film and social science in London. His interest in photography and visual art rose from an early age, and these theoretical studies helped hone his skill at understanding the relationship between image and emotion.

After a brief spate of working in the Tate Modern he developed love of Jackson Pollock abstracts as well as the sheer scale of Louise Bourgeois’s “Maman” on display as part of the Unilever Series (2000), in the Turbine Hall. John mentioned this in his latest interview.

“The sheer scale and depth of meaning to this giant creature fascinated, how it was so subtle at conveying both fear and the sense of motherhood protection and maternal instinct. It was a real pleasure to view this work every day.”

His current photographic projects revolve around themes of reinventing the concept of tree art.

Timberland Voyage is not an essentially psychedelic tree art book instead it focuses on the use of symmetry as a compositional device transforming dead and dying leafless naked trees into stand-alone works of photographic art. His work as a famous street photographer in the 21st century includes social and documentary images of the people of Russian and England. His latest project titles Komrads is an exploration into the many faceted faces of people in both urban and rural environments.

Komrads – Street photography on the people of Russia Komrads is a book he has published on the people of Russia in both urban and rural settings. The photo book consists of 34 stunning black and white images taken from all over Russia during his travels on the streets and cities of this vast country.

Lightpainting Abstract Using symmetrical form in his compositions and using long exposure his photographs in the lightpainting range of images are bright, vibrant and modern renditions of inner city lights headlamps, streetlights and car headlights using the city at night as a black backdrop. His art photographs combine dizzying flashes and streaks of light using neon, sodium, argon gases and LED lights.
