Andrew James

I grew up in San Diego, but currently live in Redlands, California. I'm studying psychology while working various odd jobs to fund my endeavours. I regularly read, write, draw, and photoshop among other programs and mediums. Recently I've been heavily involved in graphic design but am still finding time for other mediums. I was working almost strictly with film from 2008 to 2012 but had to cut back due to the cost of developer among other chemicals and became much more involved in digital processes. Working in the digital medium has allowed me to slowly verse myself in Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Cinema 4D, among other programs. Around the end of 2013, I became really inspired by Beeple, Garrigosa Studios, Christophe Gilbert, Erik Almas and so many more which led me to start experimenting with collaging and other forms of digital manipulation. I was immediately hooked and have been doing it ever since.

I usually create an artist's statement for each individual project but if I were to have one to describe my current, digital work as a whole, it would go something like this:

I use digital art as a tool for self-expression along with better understanding my reality and then expressing my interpretation of the world around me. I make this kind of art for myself to identify with hidden qualities of my character along with those around me. My goal is to explore an un-thought world through the many programs I have available. This world is a place of curious self-expression, new relationships, new beginnings, and most importantly, new stories. My method and choice of subject matter have developed from a natural growth in regards to my ideas about self individuality. As Robert Mapplethorpe famously stated, “Beauty and the Devil are the same thing” meaning, everything is up for interpretation; you can portray anything as anything else. This has led me down a path striving to create seemingly candid moments of people and objects in their most unnatural environment attempting to convey a false sense of individuality to people familiar with the model or subject, and to everyone else, preserve a ‘natural’ moment in time. Recently I have focused on digital collaging, attempting to illustrate abstract ideas that capture the mood through color, composition, and texture. Using multiple textures inspires me to compose pieces with the intention to arouse a false mood. Rather than documenting a story, I find myself interested in the results of immersing myself in the story I see and want to share. My collection of work comes from my desire to preserve important and beautiful moments in my life that come from my immersion in the reality I see.
