The inspiration for my work is rooted in my Southern California upbringing.
From an early age, I found a great fascination in all things graphic. I remember riding the school bus to Griffith Observatory for field trips and being mesmerized by large cat faces lining the drainage covers of the Los Angeles Canal. The graphic depiction of words, paired with raw imagery, impacted me more than anything I had seen before. All of my interests collided in this one art form; these prolific writers used cartoons and comics, street signage and typology to communicate with everyone they could. There seemed to be no exclusivity or hierarchy with who could view the work.

I grew up immersed in the diverse subcultures of Los Angeles, from Chicanos to Punks to Skaters. Each culture utilized a visual dialog, publicly, in one form or another. The powerful complexity of text based visual art influenced the use of street aesthetics in my work. The density of graffiti art paired with complex personal and intimate content became a natural progression in my paintings. I confront contrasting opposites inherent in relationships and investigate how those oppositions skew and sculpt a person’s view of the world.
