I was passing through Goshen, a community in southern New Jersey with a biblical name and an atmosphere not unlike the rural deep south. I'm a sucker for a rotting pier, so I pulled over and ventured on foot into the muck and salt hay to get closer with my camera. When I returned to my car I was confronted by a seriously pissed-off local gentleman who demanded to know what I was doing on his land and helpfully offered to get his gun.
"Who did you vote for?"
"I'd tell you, but you might shoot me."
This seemed to break the ice. I apologized for trespassing, promised to ask permission next time, and complimented him on his magnificent 500 acres of wilderness (I honestly thought it was a state-managed wildlife sanctuary). We shook hands and parted ways.
Our vehicles had been parked at an angle facing each other. He never saw the 2008 campaign bumper sticker.
